About me
Sappho Balfour, RN, RMT, CYT, MA
Bodywork and the feminine experience have been a life long study for me. In University I pursued Undergrad and Grad work that explored Culture, Communications and Religious Studies with a feminist lens. My 3 year teacher training course in yoga allowed me the time and expert guidance to specialise in prenatal and postnatal classes. To my great satisfaction, since 1999, I have been part of the pregnancy and postpartum journey for hundreds of women in the Calgary area. Nowadays, I’m also able to apply my knowledge from Nursing in the Labour Support sessions I offer to women and their birth partners.
An additional passion has been the practice of massage therapy since 2002. My inspiration for yoga and massage therapy remain strong as I’ve been most fortunate and able to travel internationally for further training. This is an exciting time to be a bodyworker as there are so many disciplines and somatic systems coming together and informing our practices.
In my 20+ years of experience, there are a few gems I’ve discovered. In contemporary busy-ness culture, I’ve found that helping the nervous system to unwind and coaxing the body to receive therapeutic touch is an art of feeling and listening. I sincerely believe that a client ought to always have the option of a quiet space where she can receive the work and be with her breath. In troubled areas of the body, I like to work slowly and deeply as this is where maximum unwinding happens. Of course not everyone is comfortable with silence and prefers to chat and this option is freely given as well. The space is held for you!
For the private yoga sessions, I listen to what it is you would like to receive. A helpful practice for a changing pregnant body? A postpartum sequence that helps manage aches and fatigue? Help with recovering from an injury? An evolving practice post menopause? Yoga postures and movements are explored and personal somatic discoveries generate a practice that is suitable for you. With the eyes of an experienced teacher, know that you are practicing in a way that is both helpful and relevant for you!
