Hot Stone Massage is a style of massage therapy in which water-treated stones are placed at specific sites on the client’s body to promote relaxation. Muscles are pre-treated with the heated stones to allow for deep tissue manipulations. Massage oils are usually incorporated into the massage treatment.
What to Expect During a Hot Stone Massage?
The stones are a black, smooth volcanic rock (basalt) that absorb and retain heat well. The stones are heated in a bath of approximately 60 degrees C. Warm stones are placed in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or even between your toes to improve the flow of energy in your body. Some maintain that the stones have an energetic charge that is transferred into the body.
Depending on your requests for the treatment, you may begin face up or face down. Heated stones are placed on specific points of your spine. The body is warmed up with traditional Swedish massage strokes, followed by massage techniques that integrate heated stones. Once the tissues are warmed up, then deeper massage therapy techniques may take place. As the stones cool, they are replaced with others. I use many stones of various shapes and sizes – larger ones for the larger muscles and smaller stones on smaller muscles.
