Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage therapy: relaxing tense muscles, easing sore spots, improving circulation and mobility and providing a sense of well being. Each massage is tailored specifically to the needs of a pregnant woman and her changing body. Pregnancy changes the centre of gravity and puts stress on the back, neck, shoulders, and legs. Pregnancy hormones relax the body’s ligaments and may lead to less stability at the low back and pelvic joints. In addition, the extra weight with pregnancy can cause strain on the body.
Benefits of Prenatal Massage
There’s some evidence that massage may help pregnant women who suffer from low back pain, sciatic symptoms, swelling in the limbs and chronic headaches. Pregnancy massage may decrease stress, promote relaxation and improve sleep.
Comfort During Pregnancy Massages
Many women find it uncomfortable to lie facedown in pregnancy because of tender breasts and a growing belly. It’s usually awkward to lie flat on the back because the weight of the uterus puts too much pressure on a major vein responsible for circulation in the lower extremities. For these reasons, pregnancy massages at Now & Zen are provided on an extra wide, extra padded pregnancy massage table with a full length body pillow for support. If you have any questions about whether a massage would be appropriate, ask your healthcare provider.
